Weyerhaeuser Local
Title:  Weyerhaeuser Local
Description:  Former SP 9721, now patched UP 1124, is the sole power on this day’s “Weyerhaeuser” local. Despite it being 2021 there’s more than one notable holdover from the Southern Pacific on the train today. Most obviously is the scarlet and gray paint with SP speed lettering still dodging UP’s paint shed on UP 1124. The less obvious one in this picture is the string of four former Golden West Service boxcars. Another holdover is the name the crews and dispatchers use for this daytime Springfield local, the “Weyerhaeuser.” This local was called that back in the SP days and the name is still used today despite that mill now being owned by International Paper. The nighttime Springfield local job, which uses the same power as the daytime job, still goes by the old SP name of “Vaughn Dougren” as well, despite no longer going to either Vaughn or Dougren anymore. The Rosboro mill in the background has also changed little since the SP days.

BNSF 5748
Title:  BNSF 5748
Description:  A runthrough BNSF grain train headed to the Modesto area of California is seen at Minnow on UP's tracks passing Lookout Point Reservoir. The original line through here was on the other side of the river and in this shot is underwater, but is visible in certain areas when the water is low. This train is using the 1952-built reroute that had to be built when the reservoir was created.

Heisler and SD9 Meet
Title:  Heisler and SD9 Meet
Description:  The OCSR passenger train goes in the hole at Garibaldi to allow the POTB freight to pass through and head to Tillamook. The OCSR excursion railroad would thankfully go on to grow and expand, but the POTB freight line would be wiped out by a storm in only a few more months and never recover.

Southern Pacific 2021
Title:  Southern Pacific 2021
Description:  Fairly objectively the best looking Southern Pacific-painted locomotive on UP's roster in 2021, the UP 1124, makes another appearance on the Weyerhaeuser Local as it has been doing sporadically for the last five years, and it has been a treat every time. Today's job has just finished its work in Springfield and has been given authority to enter Eugene Yard on the WP siding. It is seen here between those locations at Springfield Junction, where the former Siskiyou line ties in with the newer Cascade line.

Southern Pacific Through the Blackberries
Title:  Southern Pacific Through the Blackberries
Description:  My favorite picture from this lucky day. One of the last unpatched SP warriors in 2012 leads a long repo train of boxcars that came off of the Modoc line, over flowering blackberry bushes at Junction City. This train had also picked up some other cars at Eugene by this point. This was my last time seeing an unpatched Southern Pacific locomotive lead a train.

A Sight from the Past
Title:  A Sight from the Past
Description:  One of many semaphore signals installed on the original California to Oregon mainline, the SP Siskiyou Line, in 1907 before the opening of the Cascade Line in 1926 dried up traffic but one of the very few that lasted until 2007. This had been the Northern-most pair on the line for at least a decade, located less than 5 miles from Springfield Junction (the Cascade Line junction).

5 Locomotives, 4 Paint Schemes, 2 Railroads
Title:  5 Locomotives, 4 Paint Schemes, 2 Railroads
Description:  This was definitely the catch of the day on my relatively short Memorial Day visit to Eugene Yard, this was quite a rainbow for 2014-era Union Pacific as these days the vast majority of locomotives on trains here are a made up of a pure set of Armour Yellow, Harbor Mist, Red, White and Blue ES44ACs and SD70 variants, but on this day the lash up seen here definitely broke the mold (and there was a second patched SP AC44 in the yard too!). This is located at the South end of Eugene Yard, lash ups of power are often kept here while they await their next asignment. These units were built, from left to right: 2008, 1996, 2007, 1995, 2011.

UP Weyerhaueser Switcher
Title:  UP Weyerhaueser Switcher
Description:  Former DRGW 3129, UP 1445 has just gotten done switching Weyerhauser, Kingsford and possibly Lehigh's Cement and heads to the Main off of the old SP Marcola/Wendling Branch at Mohawk Junction (28th Street). DRGW 3129 was one of the two last GP40's built for Rio Grande. 3129 and 3130 were wreck replacements and were built in 1983, 9 years after the last order of GP40-2s, and are more externally similar to the GP50. UP 9987 is one of the few built and last remaining WP GP40-2s on UP's roster. UP 1445 has since recieved a full Union Pacific repaint.

Southern Pacific Caboose In Use And In Very Good Condition
Title:  Southern Pacific Caboose In Use And In Very Good Condition
Description:  This MoW ribbon rail train was being pushed rear-end-first employing a rarely used espee C-50-9 caboose. UP has a small handfull of these SP C-50-9s still active on their roster and the 4702 is possibly the best looking of all. Most of its sister cabeese have fallen victim to tagging and the often rainy Oregon weather. The 4702's home for most days is in Oakridge. The C-50-9 (4700 series) were the last cabooses SP ordered and were delivered in 1980. Note the size of the lash up on the train parked on the siding.

Off the Oregon Trunk, and on to the Cascade Sub
Title:  Off the Oregon Trunk, and on to the Cascade Sub
Description:  Our only train of the day due to many MoW crews all over the Cascade Sub, heads south on the 75 miles of trackage rights BNSF has on the UP's Cascade Sub, until it diverges back on to its own Gateway Sub. Note that this far south on the ex-SP Brooklyn-Cascade Sub, the searchlights dont have their trilight replacements set up yet, unlike up north on the line where searchlights are either removed, or awaiting replacement. These will probably last a bit longer than the others.

Amtrak 14 Blows Through Town, and VERY Thankfully, Passed a Failed Sabotage Attempt
Title:  Amtrak 14 Blows Through Town, and VERY Thankfully, Passed a Failed Sabotage Attempt
Description:  We chased 14 from Natron to the North end of Junction City at the grade at 661.3, after highballing out of Eugene. As soon as the crossing gates were lifted we heard the Amtrak engineer report over the scanner that they had just blown through a stack of tie plates that were stacked up on the west rail, thankfully only causing a severe "jolt" through the train, as he reported around 661.8-9. Very happy nothing bad came out of this, but i hope very badly the sociopath who put them there is caught, however unlikely that is.

Yoncalla Hauler
Title:  Yoncalla Hauler
Description:  Described over the radio as the "Yoncalla Hauler" and operating with UP power in the form of two back-to-back SD70Ms on Central Oregon & Pacific track. Up until 2007 the Siskiyou line still had several semaphore signals in use between Goshen and Yoncalla, but today this is all that remains of the blades that once covered the line. These signals appear to be a pair that was welded down into searchlights by SP which replaced them in a seemingly very random order, and now they too have fallen out of service.
